Everyone from kids to adults have been guilty of craving that bedtime snack late at night. While we have heard time and time again that this isn’t healthy, there are some snacks that will be much better than others in terms of oral and all around health. Choose one of these next time the late night cravings hit to keep your body and teeth as healthy as possible.
Avoid the Sugar
Sugar is one of the most damaging elements for your teeth. These are especially damaging when given the chance to rest against the enamel of your teeth overnight. Because of this, it is crucial to avoid these sugary snacks for a bedtime treat.
Consuming large amounts of sugar right before bed is one of the fastest ways to obtain cavities and do other damage to your teeth. Avoid this when at all possible instead sticking with other bedtime snacks. This will help your child, and even adults in many aspects including helping sleep, decreasing cavities, and more energy in the morning.
The Bedtime Snacks
While there are plenty of foods that shouldn’t be eaten, there are some that can be made for your bedtime snack. In most cases it is best to not make a habit out of eating late at night, but every once in a while exceptions can be made. Be sure that you eat at least half an hour before going to bed. After eating, the enamel of your teeth will be weakened, increasing damage if you brush your teeth during this time. Waiting at least half an hour after eating to brush your teeth will be the best way to keep your teeth healthy. Some of the best bedtime snacks available include:

- oatmeal – don’t mix this with sugars, but instead use almond butter to sweeten. In addition to this the minerals present will help the brain to regulate your sleep.
- whole grain crackers
- unsalted almonds
- low fat cottage cheese
- low sugar cereal with fat free milk
These snacks in some cases will help you to fall asleep easier, and will be less detrimental to your teeth as a late night snack. Be aware of this, taking the steps to keep your teeth healthy. While these foods can be fine right before bed, it is never a good idea to eat a large meal at this time. Limit your consumption when possible to make it easier to sleep and keep your body healthy.
