February 1, 2016

There’s ongoing discussion and debate on the health effects of this fluoride, so we thought we’d share with you some of the more common fluoride myths, as well as the facts.

Fluoride. It’s a natural mineral found in foods and water. It’s also found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. There’s ongoing discussion and debate on the health effects of this fluoride, so we thought we’d share with you some of the more common fluoride myths, as well as the facts.

Myth #1: Fluoride Isn’t Natural To Water

Truth: Almost all water contains naturally-Occurring fluoride. Over a 70-year period, studies have shown, almost unanimously, that proper fluoridation (when fluoride is added to water supply) levels in drinking water is beneficial to oral health and prevents tooth decay.

Myth #2: Fluoride Is Unsafe For Children

Truth: Exposure to fluoride at a young age is essential to strengthening teeth, providing necessary protection over a lifetime. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), fluoridated toothpaste is recommended for all children starting at tooth eruption. From 3-6 months following tooth eruption, children should be treated with a fluoride varnish — a stronger application of fluoride — at a dental office.

Myth #3: Fluoride Isn’t Necessary To Your Health

Truth: Fluoride is important to everyone’s health. The optimal amount in water, and the addition in mouth rinses and toothpastes strengthen not only teeth and oral health, but general health as well. According to the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics, children should have an application of fluoride varnish beginning at 6 months, and through the age of 5.

Myth #4: Fluoride Doesn’t Stop Tooth Decay

Truth: Different acids from foods and liquids are naturally damaging to your teeth. Brushing helps dislodge bacteria from teeth, but doesn’t reinforce or strengthen them. Certain minerals are stripped from the tooth in this process, and this is why remineralization is necessary. Fluoride effectively reapplies needed minerals, strengthening teeth and preventing decay.

Fluoride plays a major role in overall oral health. We recommend using ADA approved toothpastes and mouth rinses for yourself, and your children. Keep in mind that ingesting fluoride-added products in unsafe amounts can be dangerous to your health, so please monitor your children carefully.
